Gilroy – The Rockies of Gilroy Little League’s Boys Majors division wrapped up a championship victory by topping the Angels 4-1 Wednesday.
Pitcher Kyle Doughty kelp the game close for the Angels early, striking out four Rockies batters up until the third inning. With two outs in the third, though, the league’s home run leader, Ronnie Reed, singled to get on base. Jaylynd Gallardo, the Rockies’ pitcher, then stepped up to the plate and smashed a ball over the left-center field fence for a two-run home run.
Sammy Aptekar made a solid hit into the gap in center to bring in Ralphy Retiz for the Angels’ lone run.
Left fielder Trever Marquez of the Rockies made a great catch on a high flyball in the sixth inning, preventing the Angels from making a late rally. A grounder to shortstop Dillon Day ended the game with a toss to first.
Both teams made it a challenging and nail-biting game for the fans in the stands through outstanding defense.
The Rockies are now continuing on to the Tournament of Champions in Santa Cruz.
