GILROY – Juan Velasquez and Brandie Rodriguez didn’t make moderate improvements on their past marks Saturday. The pair obliterated their personal records.

Velasquez went under 17 minutes for the first time at the windy 2.95-mile Crystal Springs course, clocking a time of 16 minutes, 59 seconds, while Rodriguez was even more impressive, setting a new PR by 44 seconds with a mark of 19:25. Her previous best came at the same course during last year’s Central Coast Section championships.

“That was fantastic for her, the way she finished the race,” Gilroy cross country coach Cathy Silver said. “She passed at least three people I saw in the last 100 meters.”

Velasquez was one of several record runners for the boys’ side. Kyle Collett set a PR with a time of 17:51, and Raul Quintanar had a PR in 17:18.

“That was really good news for the boys,” Silva said. “It gave them the perk up that they needed. … It helps their mental state because so much of running is mental.”

The boys didn’t fare as well Wednesday at Toro Park in Salinas, but the girls remained undefeated in the Tri-County Athletic League by taking the top four spots.

Kathleen Miller, Paty Hernandez, Brandie Rodriguez and Bobula finished first through fourth, respectively.

Water Polo

Gilroy High’s girls water polo team cruised past Notre Dame on Monday, beating the host school 10-2.

Sophomore Chelsea Hill led all scorers with five goals. Michelle Shields, Nicole Nelsen, Maegan Collett and Bianca Catanzaro also netted shots.

Results from Thursday’s contest against Santa Catalina were unavailable as of press time.
