GILROY – Handling pressure is the name of the game for Gilroy High’s girls tennis team.

Facing yet another close match Thursday in Gilroy, the Mustangs responded by defeating the visiting Alvarez Eagles 4-3 by winning all three doubles matches and getting a singles win from No. 3 player Monica Liu.

“It was very exciting to watch the doubles sweep their matches and to watch Monica pull out another win for the team,” Gilroy coach Jamie Reynolds said.

Gilroy’s Holly Hunter and Kim Johnson (No.1 doubles) took their match 6-2, 6-4, Melanie Morelos and Ashley Nguyen (No. 2) won by the same score, and Cristina Carrillo and Viviana Mendez (No. 3) edged Tiffany Huynh and Ana Vega 6-2, 7-5.

Mustangs Meha Munshi, Emily Castro and Alissa Castro all lost very close matches.

While the intensity on each court was high, Reynolds said the respect being given on both sides of the net was superb.

“They are the nicest team to play against, very good sportsmanship and really respectful,” she said.

The Mustangs will be back on the court today at 4 p.m. at Notre Dame.

CROSS COUNTRY

MONTEREY – Gilroy’s varsity and junior varsity girls cross country teams both took first in their respective events at the 3-mile Monterey Bay Invite Saturday at El Toro Park in Salinas.

Maritza Ruelas was the first to finish for the JV at 21 minutes, 15 seconds, good for second overall. Kathleen Miller led the way for the varsity level at 18:56, placing third overall.

Miller was followed by Brandie Rodriguez (19:55, 11th place), Paty Hernandez (20:14, 14th), Athena Alarcon (20:18, 15th) and Savanah Salaci (20:43, 20th).

“If you calculate it out, we had better times than Aptos, which is No. 2 of all teams in [the Central Coast Section],” GHS coach Art Silva said. Silva added that a CCS title would still require getting past Carlmont.

Getting second, however, would put the Mustangs into the state meet as a team, something Gilroy came within seconds of achieving last year. Miller was the only athlete from GHS to run at state in 2007.

“If we cant get in there this year as a team, then something is wrong with the coaching,” Silva joked.

All of Gilroy’s varsity boys medaled Saturday, with Juan Velasquez leading the way at 17:21, fast enough for a 14th-place finish.

Raul Quintanar took 17th (17:29), Tim Williams placed 24th (18:02) and freshman Kyle Collett crossed the line 25th (18:03).
