GILROY – Inconsistency and a strong Salinas Cowboys club plagued Gilroy High’s boys water polo squad Tuesday.
The Mustangs lost 17-3, dropping their sixth game in as many Tri-County Athletic League contests this season. Gilroy has won two games overall, while its losses have now reached double digits.
The performance of the Mustangs in the second half of Tuesday’s game was much improved after being down 11-1 at the intermission to Salinas, which is currently atop the TCAL standings.
“That’s what we’ve been doing, better second halves than the first halves,” Gilroy coach Tom Clark said. “I don’t think they wanted to be humiliated anymore and started making a better effort.
“We’re just up and down.”
Sophomore Ben Everett led Salinas with six goals.
Michael Shields was the high scorer with two for the Mustangs. Josh Kendrick and Cameron Brown had one goal each for Gilroy, which will play Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Carmel.
