GILROY – The Silicon Valley Glory 18 Gold softball team couldn’t have gotten off to a better start this fall, winning all 10 of its games while facing teams that feature some of the best high school and college-bound softball players in the area.
Coached by Gilroy High’s junior varsity coach Joey Gonzalez, as well as ex-pro ballplayer and long-time Gilroy youth softball coach Dennis Castro, the Glory won their first two 18-under tournaments by outscoring opponents 90-1.
“We have played good teams in Colorado, [Los Angeles], some really tough teams in Lancaster this summer,” Castro said. “We have tried to play against the toughest competition, but these girls are used to big games with a lot on the line – going back to when they were only 11 and 12.”
Several key members of the team played on the 2005 Little League All-Stars team, the first to represent Gilroy at the Softball World Series.
Big bats have been shown by Emily Castro (.434 average), Melanie Morelos (.478), Michelle Sosa (.458), Adrianna Osuna (.454), and Alissa Castro (.398), while a pitching staff of Sam Parraz, Melinda Ortiz and Ashley Harrington has been equally, not allowing an earned run in all 10 games.
Glory will try to keep rolling through November as they take the field in two 18 Gold Showcase Tournaments and the State Championships in November.
