Believe me, we worked for the pittance Social Security pays us. I worked for 32 years and there was a skim-off for Social Security from every single meager check I ever earned. I was happy to know that my mom, a widow who raised a family during the Depression, had a few dollars of her own so she could survive in the knowledge that now she didn’t have to depend on her children, who incidentally had contributed to her Social Security income.

Now I receive a check every month, the amount of which would not even pay for the rent on an apartment in Gilroy. I do not know what I would do if I did not have children who watch over me and if I hadn’t saved a little nest egg for my old age.

I think the authors of that picture owes all of my generation an abject apology for begrudging us what we rightfully earned.
