Gilroy High’s Jesse Delgado capped off his sophomore year in
style this past weekend, winning the National High School Coaches
Association Sophomore Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va. Gilroy’s
Hunter Collins (senior) and Martin Gonzalez (junior) both finished
second in their respective classes.
Gilroy High’s Jesse Delgado capped off his sophomore year in style this past weekend, winning the National High School Coaches Association Sophomore Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va.

The 112-pound wrestler, who finished third at state this past season, became a national champion by winning 11-2 over Keith Surber of Illinois.

Gilroy’s Hunter Collins (senior) and Martin Gonzalez (junior) both finished second in their respective classes.

The tournament is considered the toughest in the nation, as is evident by the field. Delgado had 70 individuals in his weight class with 17 state champion medals combined, Gonzalez had 68 individuals in his weight class with 30 state champion medals amongst them and Collins had a field of 71 with a combined 68 state champion medals. Gonzalez and Collins both won their first state titles in March.
