It’s a lousy combination: 80-degree mid-November weather and an economy that’s mimicking a punch-drunk boxer. Lousy, that is, for the organizations which are trying to provide for the “least of us” – those people who are hungry and poor.
Fortunately, Gilroyans always rally to help St. Joseph’s Family Center and the Salvation Army, the two organizations that are staples in the business of assisting Gilroyans in need.
What do they need? Of course, turkeys, turkeys and more turkeys. Plus, donations of non-perishable food items and canned goods
Dried potatoes, cooking oil, margarine, butter and fresh produce – onions, celery, carrots, potatoes, fresh fruit – are always welcome.
And to round out the season, new toys (Christmas is a coming), diapers and the ever-useful cash donation are more than welcome.
The going is tough out there. We’re all skittish about the country’s economic future and our own personal security. Nonetheless, many Gilroyans have blessings to count and sharing our blessings is a hallmark of this community.
St. Joseph’s is at 7950 Church St., Suite A. For more information call 842-6662. The Salvation Army is at 200 West 5th Street and both organizations are knee-deep into the holiday helping mode. It’s important to remember, too, that donations of time are equally welcome.
