PALO ALTO – Gilroy High’s varsity girls soccer team got off to a solid start in its first game of the season Wednesday.

Finishing with a 1-1 draw against host Palo Alto – a team that has beaten the Mustangs soundly in past years – was something to build on, according to GHS coach Jose Hernandez.

Ending the first half scoreless, Gilroy was able to get on the board when Arianna Carrillo was taken down in the box halfway through the second half. The foul set up a successful penalty kick by junior Rahni Giardina.

Palo Alto matched Gilroy’s goal roughly 10 minutes later by converting a free kick.

Hernandez said the play was kind of fluke, as it was meant to be a cross but ended up finding the top-left netting.

The draw was a fine way to finish, Hernandez said, since Gilroy is still bringing in players from fall sports that recently ended.

The Mustangs’ next game will be Saturday at Scotts Valley at 11 a.m.
