Gilroy falls to North Monterey County for second time
Gilroy’s varsity boys basketball team missed a chance at redemption Thursday afternoon.

Playing the North Monterey County Condors, the team the Mustangs lost to in December’s Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament championship game, Gilroy found itself in a familiar position as the teams entered the third period neck and neck. But a slow start to the second half helped the Condors distance themselves once again, this time for a 63-51 victory.

The Condors won the prior meeting 57-47.

Derek Jensen led the Mustangs with 23 points, while Marshad Johnson had eight and Kendrick Azcueta had seven.

Gilroy now has a 6-9 record.

Lorenzo Dobson, Elijah Harrell and Justin Wheat all scored four points with Tyler Hartman making a free throw to round out all GHS scorers.

The team will be back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday, when Gilroy plays at Palma in the Tri-County Athletic League opener.

Junior Varsity Note: Gilroy’s junior varsity boys basketball team won a thrilling contest at North Monterey County Thursday, beating the Condors for the third time this year, 45-44.

With just seconds remaining, NMC had a chance to win but the last shot was off.

Max Fishler led the Mustangs in scoring with 10 points.

“You could tell they were fired up and didn’t want it to be three times,” GHS coach Jay Baksa said.

“It was close the whole game,” the coach added. “It was a fun game.
