For three quarters Tuesday night, Gilroy High’s varsity boys basketball team was right where it wanted to be. But a fantastic fourth quarter by Salinas kept the Mustangs from getting its first road win in the Tri-County Athletic League this season, as Gilroy fell 61-43.

Salinas outscored Gilroy 29-10 in the fourth quarter, with just less than half of the home team’s points coming on free throws. The Cowboys shot 14-16 in the final period, many coming as the Mustangs were forced to foul in the final minutes.

“Really, the score isn’t fully indicative of what happened,” GHS assistant coach Jeremy Dirks said. “I thought [we] played hard tonight, but we’re still turning the ball over and missing easy layups.

“Honestly, it seemed like there was a lid on the hoop”

Salinas’ Kyle Vasher was the game’s leading scorer with 22.

Derek Jensen led Gilroy with 14 points, Marshad Johnson scored nine, Kendrick Azcueta had eight and Justin Wheat pitched in seven. Lorenzo Dobson had five points and Stephen Galtman had two to round out all scorers for the Mustangs.

Gilroy’s next game will be Thursday at 7 p.m. against Alisal.
