Unless Gilroy High is wrestling the best in the state or country, anything else is just a showcase of the Mustangs’ talent.
Hosting Mid Cals this past weekend, the Mustangs ran roughshod over the competition, winning the tournament with a score of 301 – 81 points more than second place Oak Ridge.
“We did very well,” GHS coach Armando Gonzalez said. “We scored the second highest points (in Gilroy history at Mid Cals), but our glass is half empty. … We’re going to another level (in practice now) because we’re a little disappointed with some of the matches we’ve lost.”
And people wonder why Gilroy wrestling is great.*The Mustangs’ big three – Jesse Delgado (114 pounds), Martin Gonzalez (121) and Hunter Collins (191) – each won their weight class, with Gonzalez and Collins taking Most Outstanding Wrestler awards for the lightweight and heavyweight divisions, respectively.
“I did what I was supposed to do,” Collins said of his pin in the final match, taking just 64 seconds. “I wrestled as hard as I could. I’m happy with how I did.”
Collins became the first person to ever win his division at the event all four years of high school.
Delgado controlled his match with Turlock’s Fabian Garcia from start to finish, despite the score finishing close at 6-3.
Tim Ibanez was the fourth Mustang to make the finals, but lost his match in a close decision. The showing was impressive considering it was Ibanez’ first tournament of the year.
“He’s in preseason form and other guys are peaking,” coach Gonzalez said. “For him to be in the finals indicates how talented he is.”
From top to bottom the Mustangs showcased overall talent, with eight individuals placing.
Vincent Aboytes and Travis Sakamoto each took fourth, while Ethan Ogle and Jesse Rogers both took sixth. Ogle and Rogers both could have finished higher had they performed the second day, but both sat out due to illness or injury.
Four wrestlers that didn’t place but added to Gilroy’s point total with victories were Jasmine Yanez (1-2 record), Tim Caspary (4-2), Adam Rosso (1-2) and Mike Penyacsek (4-2).
“Mike Penyacsek had a great tournament,” coach Gonzalez said. “He’s really a scrapper and I’m really proud of him.”
Penyacsek rallied with three wins after losing his second match of the tournament. He lost to his final opponent Saturday, keeping him just short of placing.
If Mid Cals is to be taken as an indicator of what form Gilroy wrestling will be in weeks from now at the Central Coast Section Championships in February, Gilroy can go ahead and order another section title banner for the gym. Coach Gonzalez said Mid Cals is far and away a tougher meet than CCS.
Gonzalez then added, “That says a lot when this tournament is the weakest on our schedule.”
After competing in national tournaments to start the year, the Mustangs have already gone through much tougher matches as a form of preparation for Mid Cals. The focus, however, is always on state.
On the way to state, the team should add its sixth-straight CCS title, with a very good chance of breaking the CCS team points record, set by Gilroy two years ago at 274.5.
With a total of 301 coming at Mid-Cals, the glass looks half-full. Unless you’re looking though coach Gonzalez’ eyes, of course.
