In early December, a caller asked if auto dealers were allowed to park cars in the dirt lot across the street on Chestnut.
“I think they own that lot and will expand someday, but are they allowed to park there now?” the caller asked.
Another caller asked, “What’s going on with the Gilroy car dealers along Chestnut Street? They’ve taken to parking two dozen or so vehicles in the vacant lot across the street from their businesses. This nice clean empty lot now looks awfully trashy. I bet if the car dealers didn’t bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax revenue for the city, they wouldn’t be allowed to do this. Could you please look into whether this is legal?
Who can fix it:
Scott Barron, code enforcement officer for the city of Gilroy said: “The short answer to the question would be, no, the city would not approve of the Toyota dealership parking their inventory of cars on the empty dirt lot across the street.”
The longer answer, he said would be, “It may be possible for them to park their cars at that location if they submit an architectural and site application to the planning division.”
Once that application is approved, he added, they would have to comply with a number of conditions, including such things as paving, drainage and frontage issues among others.
“Once those requirements were complete and approved, they could begin parking on the site,” he said.
So, it appears they’re not allowed to park cars there, but with just one code enforcement officer, nothing’s beeing done.
“It’s not that we’re allowing it, we just haven’t gone after it,” Barron said.
Update:
In the meantime, they will soon build a new, larger dealership on that site. It is currently in plan-check with the building division.
“They submitted a pretty substantial set of plans,” Barron said.
