MH man injured, arrested for DUI
Gilroy – A 35-year-old Morgan Hill man was injured then arrested after he crashed into a guardrail on U.S. 101 south of Gilroy Friday night.
Witnesses told California Highway Patrol officers that Alex Gonzalez was traveling more than 100 mph when he lost control of his Mercedes SL500, crashing into a guardrail and spinning across both southbound lanes before coming to rest in a dirt field.
He suffered a major laceration to his head.
California Highway Patrol officers found Gonzalez to be under the influence of alcohol. He was flown to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
Deadline extended for new apartments
Gilroy – The deadline for people in a housing crisis who wish to pre-apply for one of 60 units at the new Sobrato Transitional Apartments under construction in Gilroy has been extended to Friday. Anticipated move in date is January 2006.
Applicants must be homeless or at risk of being homeless and must be willing to participate in case management. Preference for 44 of the units will go to income-qualified households who meet the following special needs: at least one adult household member must be suffering from depression or other mental illness, substance abuse, one or more instances of domestic violence or have an injury, illness, or disability that prevents gainful employment.
Rents are expected to range from $280 to $575 for a two-bedroom apartment, and from $280 to $650 for a three bedroom unit.
A random drawing on November 22, 2005 will determine the order in which all applications received will be screened and processed. Applicants can call South County Property Management Company at 408-842-5484 on Nov. 23, 2005 about their random drawing number.

Housing group meets today
Gilroy – The city’s Housing Advisory Committee will meet today at 6pm in the Senior Center Meeting Room, at 7371 Hanna St. The group is charged with ensuring the city meets regional, state and federal housing requirements. The upcoming meeting will include a review of the city’s current stock of homes below market prices, as well as agreements restricting the resale at market prices of homes originally purchased at below market rate.
Search for cannery workers
Gilroy – Did you work at the old Gilroy cannery for a summer? A year? A decade? We would like to hear your stories!
As part of a redevelopment project, South County Housing Corporation has launched the Cannery History Project. This project, in conjunction with the Gavilan College History Department, will employ Gavilan students to gather, preserve and share human histories of Gilroy’s cannery community.
SCH has purchased the site in downtown and plans a mixed-use development of approximately 210 residential units and 40,000 square feet of office, food service and retail space. Rather than losing the history when the buildings are replaced, SCH wishes to make the stories of people who worked at the cannery known.

Get in Gilroy’s holiday parade
Gilroy – The Gilroy Downtown Business Association today announced that it is accepting entries for this year’s Holiday Parade on Saturday, Dec. 3 and invites interested individuals and groups to participate.
This year’s parade theme is “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” and it will start at Eighth and Monterey streets and end at First and Monterey streets. The parade committee is looking for floats, vintage cars, performers and others interested in participating. Check-in is 4pm with the parade starting at 5pm.

Replace old, worn American flags
Gilroy – Every year the public brings out their American flags, as many did Friday for Veteran’s Day. If your flag is worn, faded or torn the veterans at the War Memorial District Building, 74 W. Sixth St., can properly dispose of it for you. Details: 842-4903.
Holiday Lunchin and Bazaar
San Martin Presbyterian Church on Lincoln Avenue, will be holding a holiday lunchin and Bazaar Wednesday from 11am to 1pm. Admission is free, but lunch is $7 per person and includes ham or turkey and salads. Crafts, baked goods and plants will be on sale.

Rebekah’s hosts auction dinner
Gilroy – The local nonprofit Rebekah’s Children’s Services will be hosting an auction dinner at Bonfante Gardens’ Snowflake Plaza, 3050 Hecker Pass Highway, 6 to 10:30pm, on Dec. 2.
The $75 traditional holiday dinner includes a stroll through the park to see holiday lights and bid during live and silent auctions. Guests should dress comfortably.
