Taking part in the Tri-County Athletic League finals held at Alvarez High School in Salinas Thursday, Gilroy’s boys tennis team came away with some results to build on for next season.

Vinh Vong, the Mustangs’ No. 1 singles player, won the consolation singles bracket with a victory over Monte Vista Christian’s Peter Le, and the Gilroy doubles team of Mitch Souza and Matt Chan won the doubles consolation bracket with a win over San Benito’s Tony Culler and Joe Frusetta.

“It was great (for Souza and Chan),” Gilroy coach John Langer said, noting that Chan was placed in doubles to allow senior Enkhsaikhan Erdenechimeg to play in the TCAL singles portion in his final year. “We (also) thought Matt would fare better in doubles.”

The Gilroy doubles team of Zachary Singh and Sang Min Park lost in the quarterfinals to a Salinas pairing while Erdenechimeg won one match.

Overall, the Mustangs finish the season with a 7-5 record, good enough for a tie for third place with San Benito in the TCAL.

No Gilroy player will be advancing to the Central Coast Section championships, but with a young squad that showcased several underclassmen in prominent roles this season, Langer thinks his team has an excellent chance to challenge for a TCAL title next year.

“I was very impressed with how the whole team did,” Langer said. “The depth of our team this year was impressive. We had a bunch of new guys who played well, so, we’ll be back next year.”
