Three men were shot as they stood near Rosanna and West Eighth streets, and police are searching for at least two people in what they are calling a gang-related drive-by shooting.

About 7:09 p.m., Tuesday, a group of people were approached by a white compact truck. One of the occupants fired a shotgun at the group, striking three people, all 18-year-old Hispanic men, police said. Two of the men were taken to a local trauma center. The third was examined by medics at the scene and released. The injuries of the two hospitalized victims do not appear life threatening, police said.

Neighbor Naimah Brown, 55, was in her home on Rosanna when she heard shots ring out.

“When shots are fired, neighbors know to call the police,” Brown said. She noted the authorities’ immediate response to neighbors’ calls. Brown has had to wash off gang-related graffiti from her home and mailbox before and worries for her children’s safety in a neighborhood like the one on Rosanna between Eighth and Ninth streets. When she asked police officers if they had noticed an increase in gang activity, they said no, but she’s doubtful.

“We hope there’s not going to be an epidemic of gang violence,” she said. “That would be tragic. I’m more worried about my kids. But they got to learn how to survive in this world.”

Brown said some of the neighborhood’s commotion can be attributed to “kids just being kids,” but “this shooting was not like that,” she said.

Based on information obtained during the preliminary investigation, police said the incident is gang related. Members of the Anti-Crime Team are investigating the assault.
