Two of Gilroy’s High’s best track and field athletes competed amongst some of the state’s best at this past weekend’s Arcadia Invite.

Gilroy High sophomore Sarah Unadia placed ninth in the high jump by clearing five feet while junior Peter Guenther came in 31st in the 300 Intermediate Hurdles with a time of 42.8 sconds. While the marks were somewhat below the goals of both athletes, Gilroy track and field coach Jeff Myers said there was plenty to be gained from competing at the event.

“Sara and Peter did not get the results they wanted, but they did gain valuable experience they could not get at any other invitational,” Myers said. “Sometimes you have to run with the big dogs to show exactly where you are. It’s sometimes humbling, but neccessary to make the final push towards [Tri-County Athletic League] & [Central Coast Section]” championships.

Unadia may have found a minor detail that will propel her forward as the season progresses. Telling Myers that she wanted to lengthen her appraoch before taking flight, the coach believes “she is becoming more aware of exatctly how her approach should flow.

“High jump coach Frankie Valadez has been working with her on that, but it is really nice when the athlete comes back with more input; that tells me she is really understanding what needs to be done to get the higher clearances.”

Gilroy’s junior varsity athletes competed at the Leland Invite over the weekend. Steven Heisey ran a personal record time of 51.94 in the 400 meters to finish eighth while freshman Eric Martinez finished eighth in the frosh/soph boys 65-meter High Hurdles in 10.80.
