Two men were treated and released at Saint Louise Regional Hospital Wednesday night after they were injured in a fight between rival gang members, Morgan Hill police said.
The fight started on West Main Avenue near downtown Morgan Hill, with six to eight men yelling gang slurs at each other. Witnesses called police about 9:40 p.m. to report a fight had broken out, and when officers arrived in the area, they found the group at the intersection of Main Avenue and Monterey Road in front of the Washington Mutual bank.
The men involved admitted to being gang members, according to Morgan Hill police Cmdr. David Swing, and several were arrested for outstanding warrants. The names and charges were not immediately available.
The gang members who were treated were not seriously injured.
Police officials had been concerned earlier this year about a possible outburst of gang activity during the summer, but Wednesday night’s fight is the first major gang incident in more than a month. The department has a street crimes team that focuses on gang and drug issues, and officers have been on the alert for possible gang activity.
