Red Phone: Low branches need to be cut

“I am calling about Murray Avenue north of Leavesley Road. Awhile back they always make these promises that they are going to look into it about doing something about these cars going as fast as they go on the freeway. We need someone to patrol this area, or they need someone to do something about this road. We get a lot of these speeders that come through this area. It is part residential. When we walk, we don’t have any sidewalks.”
Red Phone: Dear Speed Kills, This is indeed a problematic area. Most of Murray Avenue is within the city’s northern boundary. Red Phone passed on your comment to Gilroy Police. Sgt. Kurt Ashley, a traffic officer. He said the police regularly have radars in the area to catch speeders. “It is one of our more frequent areas that we work speed enforcement,” Ashley said.
Even though the road is near Highway 101, that doesn’t mean that you can go the same speed as you would on the freeway. So please slow down when going through this area and remember there are people and sometimes kids who may not be paying attention.
The total ticket could cost you about $150 for going up to 15 miles over the speed limit, about $260 for going 15 to 25 mph over and about $380 for going more than than 26 mph over the limit, according to drivinguniversity.com.
When to stop at stop sign?
“I was wondering if there is still a stop sign still at Las Animas and Murray Avenue. There is no white line, but the stop sign is still there. I was just curious because I see a lot of people run it. And I do myself.”
Red Phone: Dear To Stop Or Not Stop, You should still stop at the stop sign regardless of whether or not there is a white line there. Stop before the sign, not after and proceed if clear.
According to the California Vehicle Code (22450 a), “The driver of any vehicle approaching a stop sign at the entrance to, or within, in intersection shall stop at a limit line, or the near side of the crosswalk. If there is no limit line or crosswalk, the driver shall stop at the entrance to the intersection roadway. “What this means is that they don’t necessarily stop at the sign, since the sign could be several feet back from the actual intersection,” Ashley said.
