Sharks make trade; down Leafs 3-1

SAN JOSE – Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson announced, during Tuesday night’s home game against Toronto, a trade to obtain right-winger Jannik Hansen from the Vancouver Canucks.
San Jose concluded the night with a 3-1 victory over the Leafs, snapping a 1-1 tie with two goals in the final 1:23 of the third period.
San Jose sent young forward Nikolay Goldobin and a conditional fourth round selection in this year’s draft to obtain Hansen, a 30-year-old from Denmark.
“Jannik is a versatile, gritty player who plays with speed and is talented on both sides of the puck,” said Wilson. “We feel he is a perfect fit for the style of our team.”
Hansen has scored 105 goals in 565 games with Vancouver. He has six goals and seven assists in 28 games this season.
The NHL Trade Deadline is Wednesday at noon. After San Jose hosts Pacific Division foe Vancouver on Thursday, the Sharks travel to Minnesota and Winnipeg for games Sunday and Monday.
Toronto selected Scottsdale, Arizona native Austin Matthews with the first selection of the NHL Entry Draft last June. Matthews earned his team-leading 31^st goal at 6:41 of the first period as the Leafs took a 1-0 lead by converting their first power play of the night.
The Sharks bounced back to tie the score at the 12:17 mark of the second period.
Defenseman Brenden Dillon netted his second goal of the season and 15^th in a 346-game career for the equalizer. Kevin Labanc and Joe Pavelski earned assists.
The Sharks grabbed a 2-1 lead at 18:37 of the third period. Patrick Marleau drew three defenders into the left circle before dishing the puck to Tomas Hertl. The winger shook off one defender before lining a shot over the right shoulder of Toronto goaltender Frederik Andersen.
After the Leafs pulled Andersen for an extra skater, Pavelski scored his 21^st goal of the season with 22 seconds to play, Joe Thornton earned his 999^th career assist.
San Jose’s Martin Jones earned his 30^th win of the season and finished with 20 saves.
Goldobin was selected 27^th in the first round of the Entry Draft by San Jose in 2014. He played in nine games for the Sharks last season and two games this year, finishing with one goal and one assist.
