PREP ROUNDUP: CHS volleyball upends GHS

Seven GHS grapplers advance to semifinals. Ten of 13 still
alive. CHS’s Lopez in semifinals. Day 2 wrestling will commence at
10 a.m. Saturday with the finals set for 7 p.m. at Independence
High School.
Seven Gilroy High wrestlers will begin the second day of competition at the Central Coast Section Championships with semifinals matches.

Leif Dominguez (103), Paul Fox (112), Victor Olmos (119), Nikko Villarreal (125), Willie Fox (130), Blake Kastl (135) and Aaron Gonzales (140) all went 3-0 during the first day of action Friday to move through the quarterfinals and put themselves one win away from a finals berth.

As a team, the Mustangs hold onto the first-place position with 129.5 points followed by Saint Francis (93.5) and Bellarmine (72) in second and third place.

After losing his second match of the day, 145-pounder Lupe Jimenez won his next two to stay alive in the consolation bracket. Heavyweight Jose Lara mirrored Jimenez’s path and will continue his tournament in the consolation rounds. Andrew Toste (189), meanwhile, went 2-0 through his first two bouts but fell to top-seeded Logan Kellogg in the quarterfinals. Toste will resume Day 2 in the consolation bracket.

Julian Carbijal (0-2), Felix Gonzalez (1-2) and Izack Lugo (1-2) were eliminated after Day 1.

Dominguez, the tournament’s No. 2 seed will face Christopher High’s Jimmie Lopez in the semifinals. Lopez, the No. 3 seed, went 3-0 on Friday, picking up wins via 9-5 decision, first-period fall and a 13-2 major decision. In other semifinals matchups – Paul Fox takes on San Lorenzo Valley’s Michael Kraft, Olmos goes up against Devin Brown of Pacific Grove, Villarreal will engage with Los Gatos’ Robbie Chen, Willie Fox gets Carmen Soriano of Gonzales, Kastl meets up with RJ Raffanti of Bellarmine and Gonzales will go head to head with Amir Bakhshi of Cupertino.

Lopez is the lone Cougars’ representative still alive in the tournament. John Riffle (0-2), Steven White (1-2), Tomas Zamora (1-2) and Ricardo Bribriescas (1-2) also participated but saw their tournament’s come to an end on Day 1.
