Cougatrs tame Toreadors 51-39.
Head coach Heather Stewart saw a different Christopher High girls basketball team during its league contest against visiting Monterey on Monday night.
Stewart said simply that the girls are beginning to believe in themselves.
The last month hasn’t been kind to the Cougars. Close encounters surrendered late in games plus a struggling offense led to the Cougars’ 1-8 slide in Monterey Bay League play.
However, paced by 18 points from Hanna Tabron and 15 from Merrett Brown, and a defense that once again held an opponent in the 30s, the Cougars (6-14, 2-8 MBL) sent away the Toreadors 51-39 to snap a six-game losing skid.
CHS doubled up Monterey in the first half to stake to a 26-13 halftime lead. The Toreadors (11-10, 4-6 MBL) cut the deficit to eight points entering the fourth quarter but the Cougars played keep away with their lead in the final period, outscoring Monterey 14-10 down the stretch.
Haylee Peterson and Maddie Peterson each contributed eight points for the Cougars while Emily Reed and Monae Sanford had 18 and nine, respectively, for the Toreadors.
Christopher travels to Monte Vista Christian on Wednesday before returning home for the season finale versus Watsonville on Friday. Both games tip-off at 7 p.m.
