“I was just wondering what happened to Juicy Burger. I was told it has been closed for a week. It is one of my favorite hamburger places. Just wondering if it is closed for good or what is going on.”
Red Phone: Dear Left Hungry, Juicy Burger was indeed closed when Red Phone drove by this week. There were no signs saying why it was closed, and nothing was mentioned on their voicemail. That was kind of surprising considering how popular the restaurant was. And no one seemed to know why the business was closed.
Cynthia Manaay, with the Santa Clara County Department of Environmental Health, said that the restaurant wasn’t closed for health reasons.
“We did not initiate the closure. It just appears to be out of business,” she said.
The county had an old business license on file that expired Jan. 31, Manaay said. But the City of Gilroy does have a new license on file that runs from January through the end of the year filed by new owners, said Elizabeth Arde, an employee in the city’s finance department.
The new owner is Alex Lu, who said he plans to change the name to Gilroy Cheesesteak Company and reopen the business within a month after he purchases new equipment and hires a cook. He said he doesn’t have an exact date yet.
“Gilroy has several burger places but it doesn’t have anywhere that sells cheesesteaks,” Lu said.
In addition to various cheesesteaks, the cafe will sell items such as angus burgers, he said.
So, good caller, while we are losing one quality restaurant, it looks like we are gaining another one.
