of traffic at Santa Teresa Boulevard near the intersection of
Thomas Road in Gilroy.
A one-car rollover accident Wednesday shut down both lanes of traffic at Santa Teresa Boulevard between Thomas Road and Miller Avenue.
The driver of the vehicle, a woman possibly in her mid-30s, was transported via ambulance to Saint Louise Regional Hospital with possible internal injuries, said Sgt. Daniel Castaneda of the Gilroy Police Department.
“At this point, we don’t know if it was mechanical or if she swerved to avoid an animal or what exactly caused her to lose control,” Castaneda said.
He said a single witness only saw the vehicle, a blue Mazda sedan, lose control and roll into a ditch along the street’s northbound lane.
Castaneda said the woman was heading south on Santa Teresa Boulevard when the vehicle moved diagonally across both lanes of traffic and exited the roadway.
He said the woman didn’t appear injured, but internal injuries were a strong possibility.
“When you roll over in a vehicle that violently, there’s got to be something wrong inside,” Castaneda said.
He said the street was closed to avoid additional accidents that may have come as a result of drivers slowing to observe the crash.
“People have a tendency to rubberneck,” he said.
The northbound lane was reopened approximately 12:45 p.m., and the southbound lane opened five minutes later.
