Police arrested a man who was waiting to turn himself in outside the police station with a hammer, authorities said.
Joshua Johnson, 40 of Morgan Hill and a parolee-at-large, was seen on surveillance camera outside the police station at 16200 Vineyard Blvd. about 11:59 p.m. Friday, Sgt. Shane Palsgrove said.
Johnson was “acting suspiciously” outside the station’s front doors, and dispatchers from inside asked the man via intercom if he needed any help, police said.
Johnson asked to meet face-to-face with an officer, and dispatchers asked him to enter the building’s lobby but he refused to do so, Palsgrove said.
Officers went outside to meet with Johnson, who was hiding in the bushes in front of the police station, police said. Johnson was called out from the bushes. Police determined he was a parolee-at-large.
Police also found Johnson was in possession of a 12-inch ball peen hammer, Palsgrove said. The suspect did not say why he was carrying the hammer, and police do not know if he intended to use the tool as a weapon against an officer.
Police arrested Johnson on a parole hold.
