A burro fetched the highest price – $925 – of any animal adopted. Starting prices were $125. All animals received vaccinations and boosters, including those for West Nile Virus and rabies, and de-worming treatments. They were gathered from BLM land in the southeastern part of the United States. Wild horses and burros are protected by federal law which recognizes them as “living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the west,” and requires the BLM to manage the wild herds. The BLM periodically gathers the animals to control herd populations on ranges shared with wildlife and domestic livestock to ensure there is sufficient feed and water for all animals on a range.
