Two people were hospitalized Wednesday afternoon when a driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and rolled his vehicle on northbound Highway 101 just north of the Highway 25 junction, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Two Hispanic males, the driver and a passenger, were transported to an area hospital for moderate lacerations and injuries, CHP Officer Tyler Mason said.
A third passenger was not injured.
Mason said the vehicle was traveling 66 mph in the left-hand lane when the driver reportedly fell asleep, causing the vehicle to drift into the center divider. The driver overcorrected to the right, then to the left, hitting the center divider’s dirt embankment and rolling the vehicle. The vehicle came to rest on its tires on the embankment. The posted speed limit in that stretch of Highway 101 is 65 mph.
The CHP received the call at 3:23 p.m. Mason said. Officials from the CHP, Gilroy Fire Department and CalFire responded to the scene, and the roadway was cleared and reopened by 4:13 p.m., according to the CHP.
