In response to amateur chefs saying they can do just as well as the pros, Gilroy Garlic Festival officials have issued the challenge, “So You Think You Can Cook With Garlic.”
The challenge is a cooking competition beginning Monday on Facebook, culminating before a packed audience in the Cook-Off Theater July 29 at Christmas Hill Park, according to an official press released issued by the Garlic Festival Association.
“I think what the Garlic Festival does for people that love to cook is it sparks creativity in them. People will get creative and funny, but is (their food) up to par?” said Deanna Franklin, chair for the recipe stage at the Gilroy Garlic Festival.
She said the contest will attract folks who have a creative side and passion for incorporating garlic into their dishes.
The contest will be open to amateur chefs 18 and older who post a video of themselves preparing their recipe on the Festival’s Facebook page at facebook.com/garlicfestival.
The five contestants with the highest number of “liked votes” on Facebook will be posted June 6 on kgoradio.com for online voting through midnight June 17. The two individuals with the highest number of votes on kgoradio.com will be invited to prepare their recipes on stage July 29 at the Gilroy Garlic Festival.
Contest rules available Monday can be viewed at the Festival’s Facebook page or at gilroygarlicfestival.com.
The winning chef will receive $810 in cash and the runner-up will receive a $250 gift card from at any Raley’s, Bel Air Markets or Nob Hill Foods grocery store.
“We’re hoping it will be a very big success,” said Franklin. “It’s going to be fun.”
The 2011 Gilroy Garlic Festival will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 29-31 at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy. Admission costs $17 for adults, $8 for seniors ages 60 and older and $8 for children ages 6-12. Children younger than 6 will be admitted for free. Parking is also free.
