A Morgan Hill man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after assaulting his girlfriend multiple times, police said.
Mauricio Hernandez, 39, allegedly strangled the 32-year-old female victim and threatened to kill her, according to Morgan Hill police Sgt. Jerry Neumayer.
Police received a call from the victim about 10:50 p.m. Friday, after the incident occurred. Hernandez visited the woman’s apartment off Del Monte Avenue earlier in the evening and the couple began arguing.
Hernandez punched the victim on the left side of her face and choked her twice – both times until she lost consciousness, Neumayer said. Hernandez left the residence while the victim was unconscious. When she awoke she called police.
When officers arrived at the scene they saw Hernandez leaving and arrested him. He was booked into Santa Clara County Jail, Neumayer said.
The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office charged Hernandez with inflicting corporal injury on a cohabitant or former cohabitant, threats to commit a crime resulting in great bodily injury, and other charges, according to D.A.’s spokeswoman Amy Cornell. If convicted, Hernandez faces a maximum sentence of more than 12 years.
Hernandez was scheduled to be arraigned today at South County Courthouse.
The victim was transported to a hospital and treated for her injuries, Neumayer said.
