HOLLISTER — Alex Siao led the Gilroy High boys’ golf team with a 6-over 42 Thursday, and the Mustangs compiled a team score of 245 to finish in fifth place at the third Tri-County Athletic League Tournament of the season.

Host San Benito earned first place overall when it held off Palma 206-208 at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister.

North Salinas finished a distant third with a 233, and Salinas followed in fourth with a 239. Gilroy claimed its fifth-place spot, while Alisal (247) and Everett Alvarez (248) rounded out the remaining member schools, which competed on holes 1 and 11-18 of the Gabilan Course at Ridgemark, a par-36 otherwise known as the “Original Front 9” of the Old Course.

San Benito’s Will Cross and Palma’s Matt Pinizzotto each shot a 2-over 38 to earn medalist honors Thursday.

As for the Mustangs, Mitch Goldsmith trailed his teammate Siao by one stroke with a 43, while Cory Gawan followed with a 47. Gilroy’s Tommy Cox contributed a 51 on Thursday, and Philip Gundy rounded out the team’s scoring with a 62.

Julian Marquez also competed and recorded a 73 for Gilroy.

The fourth of six TCAL Tournaments is scheduled for next Thursday and will be hosted by Gilroy. The tournament will take place at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Gilroy. Tee time is 3 p.m.
