Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and Gilroy native Jeff Garcia is scheduled to work out for the Houston Texans today, according to the Texans’ website.
Garcia, who hasn’t taken a NFL snap since the 2009 season as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, is one of five quarterbacks the Texans will look at – Trent Edwards, Brodie Croyle and Kellen Clemens and Chase Clement – as they try to fill a void after starter Matt Schaub went down with a foot injury, according to the Texans’ website.
“It’s kind of news to me too,” Jeff’s dad and former Gavilan head coach Bobby Garcia said Monday. “Jeff called me last night and said they were flying him out to Houston. His whole thing is, if it happens, it happens. He’s in good shape, so we’ll see.”
In 2010, Garcia, 41, played for the United Football League’s Omaha Nighthawks, passing for 1,321 yards, nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions in leading the team to a 3-5 record.
Garcia, who graduated from Gilroy High, Gavilan College and San Jose State, played five seasons in the Canadian Football League before getting his break in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers. In five seasons with the Niners, Garcia, who has amassed 25,537 yards in his 11-year NFL career and more than 43,000 yards combined in his 17-year professional career (CFL and UFL included), led the team to two playoff appearances in 2001 and 2002 – the last postseason appearance for the franchise. The four-time Pro Bowler has also suited up for the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Eagles, twice.
