The Gilroy Police Department served a search warrant and made several arrests at about 10:10 p.m. Friday at 7216 Eigleberry St. in Gilroy. A property the GPD said in a press release is a “haven for known gang members.”
The GPD said the property has been the subject of numerous narcotics related search warrant executions over the past few years, with one of the subjects being a fugitive who was apprehended by the United States Marshal’s Office.
The Anti-Crime Team served a search warrant after agents purchased narcotics at this location, again according to the press release. The GPD said several people were arrested in that event to include a criminal alien and probation violators. Children found in the home were taken into protective custody.
Since that time, the GPD said “the conditions have become deplorable and uninhabitable. Nonetheless, this has become a haven for known gang members to congregate and assemble with what they likely thought was impunity. The property owner is an absentee owner who has not taken steps in cooperation with the police to mitigate this situation.”
The GPD said when Investigators contacted those in the residence in an attempt to arrest a wanted felon, they were met with resistance. When officers entered the home, they encountered physical and verbal resistance, according to the press release. The GPD said they arrested those responsible for violations that were discovered. One of the suspects is presently out of custody on bail in another matter, and now faces additional charges for that violation in conjunction with the new case, according to police.
GPD investigators determined the conditions present a public health hazard in the form of waste management.
The City of Gilroy has personnel and systems in place to address this type of situation, according to the GPD.
“In addition to criminal complaints, the blight will also be addressed which may include a civil process if cooperation remains fleeting. It appears the neighbors are aware of and fearful of the situation that has been prevalent for some time,” according to the GPD press release.
