Mt. Madonna students are looking forward to an overnight field trip to the Museum of Tolerance, and community donations to help make the trip happen.
Principal Jennifer Del Bono is hoping the Thursday, Jan. 27 Los Angeles excursion, the first overnight trip Mt. Madonna Continuation High School has facilitated, will be an eye-opener for students as it brings to life everything they’ve learned in the classroom.
“This trip would not only provide the students a chance to experience something outside of their community, but learn what happens when individuals allow intolerance to exist,” she said.
The Museum of Tolerance is an internationally renowned human rights organization dedicated to promoting respect and mutual understanding through education, community partnerships and civic engagement, according to the establishment’s website.
Del Bono said the museum strives to instill open mindedness in young people, teaching visitors about coexisting peacefully and exposing the injustices that have occurred throughout the global community.
“This trip would not only provide the students a chance to experience something outside of their community,” she pointed out, “but learn what happens when individuals allow intolerance to exist.”
Mt. Madonna has a student body of 200, and 30 students have been raising money to go on the trip. Del Bono said scraping up extra financial resources is a task as the school doesn’t have a parent’s club. The school also has to contend with having a wellness policy that prevents students from holding bake sales, she said.
“Just to have a field trip at all is huge for us,” Del Bono said. “Then to have it be something as important as going to the Museum of Tolerance is what makes it the icing on the cake.”
Though schools are traversing difficult economic times, Del Bono advocates for the maintenance of quality education, as well as striving to provide students with opportunities for learning and personal growth through trips such as this.
The school would appreciate any donations from individuals or businesses that would help defer the cost of museum tickets and food.
So far, Mt. Madonna has received $550 in donations. Del Bono said a donation of $25-$30 would help cover the cost of one student.
