Donald G. Wyman

On July 31, 2011, Don Wyman’s soul took wings. A devoted family man, caring friend, and avid bird watcher, Don will be greatly missed. He lived with great heart, fully committed to the people and the causes in his life. He was a dedicated “Poppy”, rooting for his grandchildren during their games, or fighting on behalf of the under-served.

In the ’60s he marched with Cesar Chavez to support migrant workers. In the ’70s he was a leader in the successful effort to Save El Toro Mountain in Morgan Hill and passing Measure E, the city’s growth control initiative. He and long-time companion, Bernice, often traveled around the country to observe rare bird species. In addition, he was a relentless genealogist, tracing his family history to John Alden and the Mayflower.

Born in Volga, SD in 1927, he grew up doing hard work on the farm. After a stint in the U. S. Army Air Force Control Tower Operator, he attended San Diego State University, graduating with distinction. While at college, he was a member of the award-winning 2-Mile Relay Team who were NCAA champions. After college, he was a high school teacher and then moved to the Bay Area where he enjoyed a long career as a computer programmer. At IBM he developed Digital Simulation Language and he was an initial employee at Measurex.

He was a tireless champion for the poor who may be best remembered for his generosity, always willing to give time and money to help others. Never passive, he lived life with great vigor. Few men at 83 are chasing fly balls in the outfield, driving a high school team to their game and hiking in Yosemite. It took a rare an unrelenting bone marrow disease to slow him down.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara Wyman-Sun and is survived by his son, Jeff Wyman; son-in-law Sidney Sun; companion, Bernice Camuso; grand children Mary Wyman and Nicole and Justin Sun; brothers Robert and Kenneth Wyman; sister Betty Wyman Knudsen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private memorial celebration will be held. A memorial fund in Don’s honor has been established at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara County.
