Craig Simmons of Gilroy stands on the green of the par-3 fifth

Local sinks hole-in-one last week
Craig Simmons’ second email read like the opening line to a fictional thriller. “It happened on the Canyon Course hole 5, 149 yards,” the email stated, leaving a valid question dangling up in the air.

What happened?

Well, it’s better than fiction, that’s for sure.

Simmons, a Gilroy resident, fulfilled every golfer’s dream, sinking a hole-in-one at Cinnabar Hills on Thursday during the IBEW/NECA Tournament.

Simmons took a 7-iron and backed in the ball for the ace as a pair of witnesses, Sal Ventura and Al Weteska, looked on.

Not keeping all the glory to himself, Simmons credited golf lessons from local pro Donny DeLorenzo for helping achieve the hole-in-one.
