Housing group meets Tuesday
Gilroy – The city’s Housing Advisory Committee will meet Nov. 15 at 6pm in the Senior Center Meeting Room, at 7371 Hanna Street. The group is charged with ensuring the city meets regional, state, and federal housing requirements. The upcoming meeting will include a review of the city’s current stock of homes below market prices, as well as agreements restricting the resale at market prices of homes originally purchased at below market rate.
Thomas Road construction continues
Gilroy – Constructions crews will be working along Thomas Road from Wisteria Drive to Santa Teresa Boulevard for two weeks beginning Monday, Nov. 14. The road will not be closed but traffic control will be in place. The work is part of the Masoni Vineyard development, a two-acre project that includes eight new homes.
Riding competition benefits 4H and SMHA
San Martin – The Santa Clara County 4H Horse Project and The San Martin Horsemen’s Association are sponsoring a Playday on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, at Taylor Made Farms in San Martin.
The event begins at 9am and is open to the public. There will be horseback riding competitions in events such as Egg and Spoon Race, Potato Race, Costume Class, Australian Trot and much more.
Events will be divided into age groups 8 years old and younger (stick horse riders), 9-13, 14-19, and older than 20 years.
The entry fee is $40 per person. Proceeds go to the Santa Clara County 4H Horse Program to fund youth programs.

The ‘Wizard’ is coming to town
Gilroy – City of Gilroy Community Services Department and Children’s Rainbow Theatre present “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” By Tim Kelly. Play will be held at the South Valley Jr. High Cafeteria with the following schedule:
• Saturdays, Nov. 12 and 19 at 5pm
• Sundays, Nov. 13 and 20 at 5pm

Stuff the van with toys for kids
Gilroy – The KB Toy Outlet in Gilroy is hosting a Toys for Tots “Stuff the Van” challenge on Saturday and Sunday, from noon to 4pm. Shoppers are encouraged to purchase toys for the children of our community and then Stuff The Van.
KB Toy is providing a 10 percent discount on purchases as part of this effort. Each day, a commercial size van provided by Gilroy resident Juan Marquez of Landtech Capital will be awaiting the donations at the front of the store.

Celebrity fashion show tonight
Gilroy – Leadership Gilroy’s “Just Believe” Celebrity Fashion Extravaganza is today at 6pm at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club. The evening includes a social hour, dinner, live auction and 105 models in 30 different segments which are all choreographed to music. Tickets are $75 per person. Proceeds benefit Leadership Gilroy’s 2005-2006 program.

Search is on for cannery workers
Gilroy – Did you work at the old Gilroy cannery for a summer? A year? A decade? We would like to hear your stories.
As part of a redevelopment project, South County Housing Corporation has launched the Cannery History Project. This project, in conjunction with the Gavilan College History Department, will employ Gavilan students to gather, preserve and share human histories of Gilroy’s cannery community.
SCH has purchased the site in downtown and plans a mixed-use development of approximately 210 residential units and 40,000 square feet of office, food service and retail space. Rather than losing the history when the buildings are replaced, SCH wishes to make the stories of people who worked at the cannery known.

Festival of Trees benefit
Gilroy – Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park is known for its world famous Circus Trees, but on Friday, Dec. 2, the non-profit theme park boasts about a different kind of tree – Christmas trees and the spirit of giving. Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park will host the 3rd annual Festival of Trees Premier Dinner and Live Auction benefiting Rebekah Children’s Services. The $75 per person auction dinner runs 6 to 10:30pm and includes a traditional holiday dinner buffet with savory side dishes and desserts served inside the park’s majestic Snowflake Palace. Guests are encouraged to dress comfortably for an outdoor winter evening that also includes an exclusive stroll through the park’s Holiday Lights display. There will be no rides in operation during this event.

Free composting class
Morgan Hill – The cities of Morgan Hill and Gilroy in coordination with the County of Santa Clara host a Composting Basics for Beginners class Saturday, 10am to noon in Morgan Hill. Admission is free, and all interested adults are invited to attend and learn the ABC’s of backyard and worm composting in a fun and informative classroom experience.
Discover ways to recycle “garbage” – yard trimmings and food scraps – into the magic soil conditioner gardeners call Black Gold. Local Master Composters conduct the workshop, and attendees will learn how to purchase low cost composting bins and equipment to get started composting. Mt. Madonna school information day
Watsonville – Mt. Madonna School, a preschool through 12th grade private school located at 491 Summit Road in Watsonville, will stage an information day on Saturday, from 12 to 2pm. Parents will have a chance to decide if the arts and academics school, set in a beautiful mountaintop setting, is right for their child.
