The buzz on batteries
“Where can I recycle all my old batteries? I have no idea where I can take them.”
Red Phone
Good question, good caller, as you know, batteries contain numerous toxins and metals that we don’t want to leach into our landfills. Red Phone moseyed up to the Web site for South Valley Disposal & Recycling Inc. where there is a great pamphlet that you can download that outlines many different materials and how they should be handled at your recycling bins. We went ahead and looked up batteries, and here is what South Valley disposal requests:
HOUSEHOLD BATTERIES: Put AAA – D, 9V, alkaline, rechargeable, and button cell batteries in a zippered plastic bag on your paper recycling bin. No car batteries.
Does not like anonymous donors
“I just finished reading where almost 90 percent of all the money collected for all of the city council candidates is being reported as anonymous donors. I don’t know who they think they are keeping this information from us, but I want you to tell the candidates loud and clear that there isn’t anything to prevent filing a lawsuit and getting them recalled when we find out who these people are who are coming into Gilroy and financing these campaigns.”
Red Phone:Well, good caller, consider them warned.
Kudos for the crosswalks
“I just wanted to compliment the city on the new crosswalk at the corner at Welburn and Kern avenues near Rod Kelley Elementary School where those two little boys were hit. I know in the past, there was only three crosswalks and where they were hit was not a crosswalk, but now all four ways are really bright, they look great. I think all key intersections near any of our schools should be marked such.”
Red PhoneSchools, hospitals – any heavily trafficked pedestrian area – should have clear crosswalks. Let’s hope the momentum continues.
What don’t you understand about ‘STOP?’
Last week I saw what I feel is an epidemic of people in Gilroy not stopping at stop signs, especially if they are on a cell phone. I saw five people in one day, and they were of all ages and it’s not from any particular group. I have had so many people not stopping when making a right turn onto Church Street. Is there anything we can do? Not stopping at stop signs will get a lot of people killed.
Red PhoneYes, good caller, you can contact the Gilroy Police Department at its nonemergency number at (408) 846-0350 and request increased patrols in your neighborhood, letting them know the exact intersection and what the motorists are doing.
