Work in Gilroy’s sister city

Gilroy – A Coordinator of International Relations is needed to strengthen sister city relations, represent Gilroy at events and socials, arrange international travel, build cross cultural relationships, and teach English and American culture in Gilroy’s sister city in Japan.

The contract is good for one year and includes good salary, medical benefits, a furnished apartment, and travel expenses. The position starts Oct. 13. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree, be from the Gilroy/Morgan Hill area, love people and trying new things.

Free film series for adults

Gilroy – Adults ages 55 and up can participate in a free class/film series through the Gavilan College Department of Noncredit Instruction. Humanities 767, “Film Classics” is designed to study the facts, fantasy, history and trivia of classic and modern films. The background and history of each film and its performance will be compared and contrasted. This class is “open entry” meaning that participants do not have to attend all class sessions.

Instructor Grant Richards is a graduate of Gilroy High School and Gavilan College and teaches film history and film production at Gavilan College.

Spring-themed fashion show

Gilroy – Elks Lodge #1567 Fashion Show, “Springtime in the Rose Garden,” March 10. Show will feature fashions and accessories from local boutiques and stores. This event begins with no-host cocktails at 11am, luncheon at noon and fashion show from 1 to 2:30pm.

All proceeds benefit the Elks philanthropic efforts to help crippled and disabled children. Tickets are on sale for $25 per person at the Elk’s Lodge, 2765 Hecker Pass Highway. Tickmay be picked up, Monday through Friday, 9am to 1pm at the lodge office.

Try out for baseball team

Gilroy – Gilroy “Heat” American Legion summer baseball team is holding open tryouts 9am March 11 at Gilroy High. It is open to all 14 to 17 year olds and cost is $10 for the tryouts.

Register for St. Mary’s

Gilroy – Registration for St. Mary School, 2007 – ’08, will take place at noon Saturday, in the school gym, 15 First St.

The school enrolls students in grades K-8. Bring your child’s birth certificate, baptismal certificate (if applicable) and a $25 application fee. The application form can be found on the school Web site, www.stmarygilroy.org or picked up at registration.

Students in grades first through eighth will be screened once paperwork is complete; students entering kindergarten will choose a testing time on either March 10 or March 17.

Fireman’s ball raises funds

Gilroy – An elegant evening to raise funds for the firefighter’s auxiliary emergency fund is scheduled for Saturday evening at 6pm at the Gilroy Elks Lodge, 2765 Hecker Pass Road. No-host cocktails start the event followed by a 7pm buffet dinner. From 8:30 to 9pm, a raffle is held followed by dancing until 1 am. Tickets are $80 per couple or $40 for a single.

Bach, blues, swing and jazz

Gilroy – The Gavilan College Music Department and South Valley Symphony present the South Valley’s most talented musicians in Bach to Blues Friday, March 9 at 7:30pm at the Gavilan College Theater; 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

Proceeds benefit the Gavilan College Music Department. Tickets are on sale at the Gavilan College Bookstore, Porcella’s Music, and Carole’s Hallmark in Gilroy, Booksmart in Morgan Hill and the Gavilan College Briggs Building in Hollister.

Prices are $30 for V.I.P. tickets (includes premium seating and a gift bag), $15 for general admission, and $10 for seniors/students. Advance purchase is recommended. Tickets will also be sold at the theater box office starting at 6pm on the day of the performance.
