San Jose – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Carl Guardino, CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group Leadership Group, to a four-year term on the California Transportation Commission.

The nine-member commission is responsible for the programming and allocating of funds for construction of highway, passenger rail and transit improvements throughout California.

“I am honored and humbled by the governor’s appointment and look forward to making a solid contribution to the work of the commission,” Guardino said.

He begins his duties March 1.

Guardino has led or co-led a number of efforts and initiatives that have benefited the region’s employees, employers and economy.

He led the 1996 Santa Clara County transit sales tax measures A and B, which generated $1.4 billion in local funding for 19 specific road and rail transit improvements, all finished on time and on budget.

In 2000 he co-led Santa Clara County’s 30-year half-cent sales tax measure, which went into effect April 1, 2006

He also led Santa Clara County measure A in 2002 to direct funds for important local road needs and has volunteered as an advisor to numerous county transportation measures, including successful initiatives in San Mateo, Contra Costa, Alameda and Marin Counties.

Mount Madonna School hosts campus tours

Gilroy – Mount Madonna School will be giving tours during the first two weekends of March.

Families interested in placing students in the sixth, seventh or eighth grades can tour Thursday, March 1 from 9:30 to 11:30am. Families interested in the high school can tour March 7 from 9:30 to 11:30am. Reservation required at 847-2717.

Bach, blues, swing, jazz and much more

Gilroy – The Gavilan College Music Department and South Valley Symphony present the South Valley’s most talented musicians: Maria Amirkhanian, John Garcia, Art Juncker and the Gavilan College Performance Ensemble, Alberto Marques, Candace Fazzio, Nate Pruitt and Primary Colors, and the winner of the 2nd Annual Marion Filice Piano Competition in Bach to Blues Friday, March 9 at 7:30pm at the Gavilan College Theater; 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

Bach to Blues includes an interactive musical intermission with an opportunity to enjoy refreshments.

Proceeds benefit the Gavilan College Music Department. Tickets are on sale now at the Gavilan College Bookstore, Porcella’s Music, and Carole’s Hallmark in Gilroy, Booksmart in Morgan Hill and the Gavilan College Briggs Building in Hollister.

Prices are $30 for V.I.P. tickets (includes premium seating and a gift bag), $15 for general admission, and $10 for seniors/students. Advance purchase is recommended. Tickets will also be sold at the theater box office starting at 6pm on the day of the performance.

Elk’s fashion show benefits disabled children

Gilroy – Elks Lodge #1567 Fashion Show, “Springtime in the Rose Garden,” March 10. Show will feature fashions and accessories from local boutiques and stores.

This event begins with no-host cocktails at 11am, luncheon at noon and fashion show from 1 to 2:30pm.

All proceeds benefit the Elks philanthropic efforts to help disabled children. Tickets may be purchased Monday through Friday, 9am to 1pm at the lodge office, 2765 Hecker Pass Highway.

SV Symphony presents Fanfare for Families

Gilroy – South Valley Symphony invites you to a program for all ages at 4pm, March 17 at the Gavilan College Theater. The musical selections range from classical to contemporary.

Admission prices are $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens age 55 and older and $9 for students ages 12 to 18. Children younger than 12 will be admitted free with a paid adult admission.

Tickets can be purchased at Porcella’s Music in Gilroy; Carole’s Hallmark Store, located at 779 First St., Booksmart, in their new location at 80 East 2nd St. (the corner of 2nd and Depot Streets). Tickets will also be available one hour before the performance at the Gavilan College Theater, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

Disembark on a ‘Path of the Padres’ hike

Los Banos – The staff at San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area will again be leading the popular “Path of the Padres” hikes on most Saturdays and Sundays starting March 3 through April 29. These hikes are open to the public, ages 6 and older, by advance reservation only. School group hikes may be arranged for Thursdays or Fridays.

The hike begins at the Los Banos Creek Reservoir boat launch ramp at 8am and returns about 3:30pm. A pontoon boat carries passengers for about 30 to 40 minutes to the west end of the reservoir. Along the way, short stops are made to observe wildlife along the shoreline.

The group disembarks at the west end of the reservoir for a five mile round-trip hike. This hike is moderately strenuous and will take about five hours.
