Sharon Avina, an eighth grade Language Arts teacher at South Valley Middle School, reacts as Aaron Valenta, Chima Ikeme and Steven Hebert surprise her during class Monday with a new chair to replace one she has had for more than 10 years. Five students – concerned the chair was aggravating Avina’s back problems – raised $202 from fellow students, teachers and parents. Principal John Perales chipped in an additional $98 to replace her old chair, which had been handed down from a previous teacher who had retired.
