Teachers get discount on school supplies at Barnes and Noble

Gilroy – Teachers of grades K-12 are eligible to receive 25 percent off school-related purchases Jan. 22 through 30 at Barnes and Noble, 6825 Camino Arroyo in Gilroy Crossing.

Teachers can fill out an educator identification card at the store, which enables them to receive 20 percent off school-related purchases throughout the year. The extra 5 percent savings is part of Barnes and Noble’s educator appreciation week.

ICF polenta dinner benefits

Gilroy – The public is invited to the Italian Catholic Federation Branch 28, Gilroy will present their fifth annual Polenta Dinner Saturday, Jan. 29 at St. Mary Church in Cullen Hall 11 First Street, Gilroy .

All proceeds benefit ICF charities including scholarships for local students. Take out will be available after 5:30pm Bring your own containers

Dinner will be served from 6 to 8pm.

Donation $12 for adults and $5 for children younger than 12.

Explore the Elkhorn Slough wetlands on a boat

Moss Landing – Don’t miss out on the winter migration of thousands of birds. Explore the wetlands of Elkhorn Slough on a stable pontoon boat.

Also see otters and seals this time of year. Two-hour guided tours leave from Moss Landing Friday at 9:15am; Saturday at 9:15am; Sunday at 12:15pm; and Monday at 11:15am.

Explore the old quicksilver

mines of Almaden

Gilroy – The Gilroy Historical Society is inviting the public to go with them on a tour of the Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum on Saturday.

The free tour begins at 10am. After viewing the museum the group will take a self-guided walking tour of nearby historic buildings associated with the mines.

New Almaden was California’s first mining operation, beginning in 1845, and was of great importance during the Gold Rush as mercury is the primary reduction agent of gold and silver. The area was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1958.

Members and friends may meet at 9am Saturday at the Gilroy Museum, 195 Fifth St., for carpooling, or at the Almaden Mining Museum, 21350 Almaden Road, San Jose at 10am.

Pet hospital’s open house will feature prizes, tours and fun

Gilroy – Princevalle Pet Hospital, 7995 Princevalle St., will hold an Open House on Saturday from 11am to 2pm.

Come and join in the animal-filled fun with tours of the facility, raffle prizes and information booths for all ages.
