Gilroy – The gowns have been tried on. The caps have had their tassels toyed with. Speakers are mulling over their speeches. And seniors are absent from campus, busy running around Disneyland.

The signs all point to one conclusion: Graduation is near.

Gilroy High School will award diplomas to 438 seniors at a 6pm Friday ceremony held on the football field. The event will feature speeches by valedictorian Megan Litle, salutatorian Adam Shorr and keynote speaker Mirra Shernock, an English and journalism teacher.

The festivities also will feature a procession of students bearing the flags of the different countries from which they emigrated. These nations are Canada, China, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Great Britain, India, Mexico, Philippines, Portugal, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Vietnam.

While graduation is Friday, seniors have already started practicing. The school held two dry runs Monday and Tuesday to prepare students for the big day. Students that did not attend were barred from walking at graduation.

The seniors also are not waiting for Friday to celebrate. Students received their yearbooks and played on inflatable toys last Friday at the annual Day on the Green. The seniors also took off for a two-day trip to Disneyland this morning and will have a last hurrah Friday night at the Grad Nite celebration following the school ceremony.

In addition to the students who are walking Friday, some students have elected not to walk or have been prohibited from walking and will receive their diplomas later.
