Californians hoping to win a record $370 million Mega Millions jackpot bought so many lottery tickets they overwhelmed the system, a spokesman said Wednesday.

Winning tickets for Tuesday’s 12-state lottery were

confirmed in New Jersey and Georgia at about 4:30am but it took another six hours to confirm there was no grand-prize winner in California.

“Sheer volume” caused the delay, California Lottery spokesman Rob McAndrews said.

The winning numbers were: 16-22-29-39-42, with the Mega Ball 20. Nine tickets sold in California had five of the six winning numbers and were worth $242,232 each, the California Lottery said.

Wednesday night’s Super Lotto grand prize is about

$57 million.
