Let Elected Officials Run The City

I can’t believe the firefighter’s house wasn’t searched for
snail bate when they found that meat in his yard. Any one of us and
it would have been grounds for a search warrant, although it’s
probably too late now.

Search for snail bait

“I can’t believe the firefighter’s house wasn’t searched for snail bate when they found that meat in his yard. Any one of us and it would have been grounds for a search warrant, although it’s probably too late now.”

Red Phone:

Good Caller, Red Phone contacted Cpt. Kurt Svardal at the Gilroy Police Department, and here is his response:

“Any investigative step that is used/not used would not be released at this point in an investigation,” Cpt. Svardal wrote in an e-mail reply. “As for the caller thinking that obtaining a search warrant is a rather easy process, it is not.  It requires the review of a judge, who does not simply sign them. A person’s home is his or her castle and judges are very reluctant to issue an authorization for the police to enter the castle without cause.”

Red Phone appreciates Cpt. Svardal’s prompt reply. We would clarify for our caller that the poisoned meat was found in the yard of the family filing the complaint, not the firefighter’s.

no online access

“Your little blurb today about the contracts for the police chiefs states that you can read them online. Since I’m not online, how am I supposed to read them if I’m nosey enough to want to read them?”

Red Phone:

Good Caller, the police chiefs’ contracts were uploaded to our Web site because their sheer size prohibited us from running them in our hard-copy edition (and the trees and our press operators love us for it). However, if you are not wired where you live, you can go to the Gilroy Public Library and access our Web site from one of its public computers (www.GilroyDispatch.com). Failing that, you can always request them from City Hall. They are public documents.

trash left behind

“Hi Red Phone, I was calling to find out about the trash that is picked up on a volunteer basis. You know the one where you adopt a street? I think what they do is there are little volunteers that go around in their little volunteer suits and they pick up trash.

My confusion is that I’ve seen on Alexander Street between Ninth and Eighth streets across from the old Gilroy Lumber there was a gentlemen out there picking up the trash I would say about a month ago and he had 10 garbage bags full that I could see but he also had piled empty buckets and I think pallets of wood and even old tree limbs and those have yet to be picked up.

I think it’s unfortunate that someone has spent their time to clean up the area but it still looks like it’s organized trash now instead of being all over the place so if you could find out why they haven’t picked up the excess and let us know that would be great.”

Red Phone:

Caller the program you are speaking of is Keep Gilroy Clean & Green run by Leslie Wilcox, Environmental Programs Assistant for the city.

“We had our streets department go out this afternoon and pick it up,” Wilcox said. “Our trash company is only contracted to pick up trash bags and the real bulky items like stoves. The items left brought up a safety issue because they are loose debris and someone has to pick them up by hand.”

The garbage collectors are specified on what they can and can’t pick up and this situation brought up the fact that there is a slight kink in the system. So, the department had a staff meeting Friday to address this gap in progress and a specific person will be assigned to go out and pick up items like the ones that were left behind when an area is cleaned up.

If you would like to donate a little of your time to help keep our good city uncluttered you can head over to the services department in city hall for information on how to volunteer. Wilcox said city services is working on creating signs to be posted in an adopted neighborhood that display who is donating their free time to take care of it. Stay tuned for a story on this project and our good citizens.
