Gilroy – The Gilroy High baseball team evened its record Friday and ended a three-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over Mountain View in a game played at home as part of the Carmel Invitational.

The Mustangs scored four times in the bottom of the first inning and got five solid innings on the mound from Kevin Grove to get back into the win column.

“We did a good job. We had a good approach at the plate,” Gilroy coach Clint Wheeler said. “We put the ball in play.”

The Spartans’ helped the Mustangs out a bit in their first-inning rally.

With two outs, Michael Stevens was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a Tyler Osborne single. The next three batters all walked to force in a pair of runs.

Charlie Duffy, who had reached on a walk, scored on a wild pitch and Jacob Dexter delivered an RBI single to make it 4-0.

Dexter later singled and scored in the fifth inning. He was 3-for-3 and Osborne was 2-for-4 as the pair combined for five of Gilroy’s six hits.

Grove allowed just one run over his five innings to get the win and Adam Martinez pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

Wheeler was happy to get back on the winning side, although he acknowledge the three straight losses had come to top-notch competition (St. Francis, Bellarmine Prep and Carmel).

“Those were three good teams so it’s not as tough to swallow,” Wheeler said.

The Mustangs return with a double dose of action today. They’ll travel to face Los Gatos at 10am in the Los Gatos Tournament and host Monte Vista Christian at 3pm in the Carmel Invitational.
