This Friday, folks are invited to attend a concert of four trombones down at the Methodist Church at the corner of 4th and Church Streets. It is the 31st concert in a series begun by local writer-teacher-philanthropist Bill Flodberg and musician Allen Douglas. The trombones start at 7:30pm. Donations are accepted.
As the Easter season approaches, a Lenten series is being kicked off at the Methodist Church with a potluck soup supper at 6:30pm followed by a lecture/discussion at 7pm each Wednesday until March 28. Former teacher, historian, Pastor Emeritus, and experienced counselor Rev. Charles Krahenbuhl is leading the discussion series. Hugh Gailey (retired astrophysicist – he has been described as both rocket scientist and historical expert) will co-lead the March 14 discussion.
The Lenten series will focus on taking an in-depth look at the “American religion.” Christianity takes a form in America that is uniquely different “God Event” at a camp meeting in Cane Ridge, Kentucky.
On March 28, Dr. Carmichael Peters, former Santa Clara University professor and ultra in-demand speaker and retreat leader, will finish the series. He will give Kirkegaard’s view on religious existence, and it promises to be a fascinating night of wit, intellect, and spirituality. Trained as a Jesuit, but also a Zen Master, Dr. Peters is always brilliantly insightful and inspiring.
We regretfully bid farewell to longtime Gilroyans Marge and Everett Wentworth as they leave Gilroy this week to go live near their grandchildren in Manteca. Well into her 80s, Marge has remained such a steadfast and active contributor to so many good causes in Gilroy – she will be sorely missed. Marge’s great niece, Heather Brodersen, is leaving on Thursday to perform on tour with Gilroy high’s wind ensemble and symphonic band. She is looking forward to performing on the bassoon at a number of colleges. The band members are also looking forward to dressing up and attending an official symphony performance in L.A.
Sophisticated soprano Lara Bruckmann is a talented performer who balances her teaching with an active operatic, concert, and cabaret career. On stage, she exudes Nicole Kidman beauty and specializes in comedic and character roles, early 20th century cabaret, as well as new music. With her versatility, she is able to teach all ages and in many musical styles. She has indeed come a long way since her job description included singing “Happy Birthday” in Italian at a restaurant called the Macaroni Grill! Her mother, Gilroy’s Sally Bruckmann, has invited all who are interested to attend Lara’s upcoming performance with the San Francisco Choral Society when they perform J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor at the Calvary Presbyterian Church in S.F. at 4pm, Sunday, April 22nd (see the Web site sfchoral.org). A group of Gilroyans plans to carpool to the performance. This just in from vocal coach Sandra Marlowe of Gilroy’s Monterey Music Academy:
“Dear Friends, Romans, Country … er, uh … folk! Ready for a break from the winter blues and blahs? San Benito Stage Company and Ridgemark Golf & Country Club of Hollister present dinner theater over four weekends in March with “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum.” This Romanesque farce by Shevelove & Gelbart includes witty, fast-paced dialogue and bawdy humor, along with melodic ballads, catchy tunes, and clever lyrics by Sondheim. The spirited cast and their hysterical antics will leave your belly aching from laughter, which will help work off those extra calories … ” Marlowe adds, “Come say “Hi” as I’m sneaking out from behind the piano.”
The $40 ticket price includes a buffet dinner with dessert and coffee at intermission. Friday and Saturday evenings the door opens for 6:30pm dinner with 8pm show; Sunday matinee (18th) opens with brunch at 12:30pm and show at 2pm. There is a no-host bar. Call (831) 637-2332 for tickets.
