battle for second heats up.
Gilroy and Salinas remained tied for second place in TCAL and
the guaranteed spot in the Central Coast Section tournament as they
each had 217 strokes, a distant 22 behind the Chieftains. San
Benito was three strokes back at 220.

“The blustery conditions made scoring tough at Salinas Fairways,” GHS coach Eric Kuwada said. “The wind was howling out there at 30 miles per hour.”
Mustang Estevan Gonzalez handled the wind exceptionally well, shooting 39. Tyler Park was next at 41 and Jordan Miller followed at 42. Kelly Cox (46) and Dan Dockendorf (49) rounded out the Gilroy team scoring. Jonathan Higgins shot 52.
“Estevan played tough,” Kuwada said. “He hit seven greens and from there it was easy to make par. He worked on some things this weekend and may have found some consistency in his game.
“Tyler came through today. He was relaxed and took the tough conditions in stride. As he walked the fairways, he seemed assured of himself and it paid off. He didn’t let the windy conditions bother him.
“Jordan played consistent. I think that is his fifth 42 this season. He is adjusting to some new irons and so that will take time.”
TCAL matches won’t resume for another three weeks, but the Mustangs will keep busy with non-league events in the meantime.
“We need to keep playing and lower our team score,” Kuwada said. “It’s going to be a battle to the end with Salinas for the second spot.”
