Wrapping up its inaugural 8-man football season, the Anchorpoint Christian Warriors finished with an exclamation point in the school’s first-ever Homecoming, defeating Calvary Chapel 56-0 Saturday.

Christian McCrimmon started the game by giving a slight scare to his coaching staff when he let the opening kickoff bounce and roll between his legs as oncoming tacklers approached. He quickly put coaches at ease by returning the ball for a touchdown from the 1-yard line.

“Christian was phenomenal,” Anchorpoint coach K.C. Adams said. “He opened up the gate.”

Adams could have been referring to flood gates because the rest of the game was equally lopsided in the Warriors’ favor.

Running back Josh Ignagni scored touchdowns on both offense and defense and senior quarterback Adrian Rodriguez was able to beat Calvary deep with regularity.

“It was our first-ever Homecoming game, so that was the way to do it,” Adams said. “It was one of those games where almost everyone scored.”

The Warriors finished the season 5-2 overall, 4-0 in the Coastal Athletic League. According to Adams, Anchorpoint’s successful season has other private schools in the area considering putting together teams of their own to join the league.

For a program in it’s infancy stage, the coach said the team had grown up over the course of the season and would be even better next year as all but two players return.

“The season was an unbelievable success,” Adams said. “We had a coaching staff that was second to none and I had players that bought into the system.”

The games brought to life the hopes of the coach and the school’s founder Stephen Malone, who died earlier this year.

“Five years ago, I walked out here with … Mr. Malone. We used to walk out [to the field] when we planted the grass,” Adams said. “He said he could just see us playing football here. And I said, ‘I could see a league championship.’ ”
