Gilroy – Burlingame showed Gilroy something Thursday the Mustangs are unlikely to see much of this season.
The Panthers utilized the European style of play and did so successfully enough to gain the edge in the first half.
However, Gilroy adjusted and the freshman connection of Victor Garcia and Forrest Alvarez provided the equalizer as the Mustangs tied Burlingame 1-1 in a nonleague boys soccer contest at Garcia-Elder Complex.
“It was great that we had this opportunity,” GHS coach Armando Padilla said. “Our league has Latin-style teams. It’s good to know we can play against the other style as well.”
The Panthers scored five minutes into the game when Matt Fondy took a pass from Peter Olskiy and booted the ball into the net.
GHS (4-2-3) had its chances in the first half as well as Humberto Pineda just missed on a header and Bruce Ocana’s crossing pass was too hard for two charging Mustangs to handle.
Gilroy outshot Burlingame 6-2 in the first half and 10-4 in the game. But its only goal came nine minutes into the second half when Alvarez assisted Garcia. Kevin Grove sent a direct kick to Alvarez, who headed the ball to Garcia in front of the net.
“We’re still having lapses and mistakes, but it’s early enough in the season that we can still correct things,” Padilla said. “We need to improve our defensive third and attacking third.”
