Such is life for the Mustangs in the Tri-County Athletic League. It’s easy to understand why GHS coach Armando Gonzalez and the team point to the postseason. That’s because there is hardly any regular season.

The Mustangs’ 74-0 win over the Trojans was another ho-hummer.

There were eight bouts. Gilroy had five first-period pins, another in the third period and two major decisions.

“Everybody stepped up and wrestled with the intensity we expect,” Gonzalez said. “They went out and wrestled aggressively. We’re gearing up for Mid-Cals (this weekend at Gilroy).”

Freshman Rodney Balajadia got things started with a 29-second pin of Rene Sanchez at 119. Guerrero finished by pinning Emmanuel Lopez seven seconds before the end of the first period.

In between, Rudy Maldonado, Austin Gubrud and Hunter Collins made quick work of their opponents. Freshman Vincent Aboytes also had a fall. Travis Sakamoto and Justin Blankenship rang up 14 points in their bouts.

“We’re working hard and getting ready for the big tournaments,” Guerrero said. “The team’s doing great. We can always show improvement, though.”

It’s hard to show improvement in a duel meet in which the team is 10 points away from a perfect score.

And yet, the Mustangs are always a work in project. Even when they get first-period pins, they don’t lose their mental edge.

“I could have done better but I beat him,” Guerrero said, summing up his bout. “I’m looking forward to Mid-Cals. The team usually does well. We have a couple of guys who are sick but I think we’ll be ready.”
